| Scoring and Making Up Scores |
The archers that shoot 10 yards will shoot a total of 50 arrows, 10 practice and 40 for score. The archers that shoot 15 or 20 yards will shoot a total of 70 arrows, 10 practice and 60 for score and all but the High School youth will use the larger colored targets. Each youth will need 6 scores. The first week will be used as a bank score and will only be used if they do not have enough scores in by the end of the league. This is a handicap system league and all the standings are figured at the end of the league. Should youth need to make up a score, there will be some make up dates and times posted. If your family is a member of SCWA, with parental supervision, youth participants can make up scores at their convenience as long as it doesn’t interfere with other club functions such as other leagues or tournaments. The fun day with shooting games and special targets will be the weekend of February 28 and March 1. |
| Shooting and Safety Clinic |
All youth that are shooting the league for the first time must attend
a shooting and safety clinic. The clinic material ranges on how old
the kids are and usually a cross between “learn to shoot a bow and
arrow” and “Archery equipment and basic techniques”. There is the
possibility of not needing the clinic if you have completed a similar
class through 4-H or Scouting.
The club has a limited range of equipment (novice level) available
for beginners to use while they decide if archery is for them. If
archery is a good fit then there is no substitute for owning your own
equipment. |
| Tips on Getting Started in Archery |
You've come to the right place with your question about how best to
get your children and possibly yourself started in archery. I am
chairman of the youth program at South Central Wisconsin Archers, but my goal is to promote archery first and encourage membership in the SCWA second, and only when appropriate for an individual or family. The truth is that once someone in this area becomes and archer -- by any means -- they soon discover that the SCWA is such an amazing place to shoot, that they seek membership.
How to get started in the sport of archery and how much will it cost
are the most common questions asked by people that are not archers already. Archery can be as inexpensive or as expensive as you wish.
The club has some a limited range of equipment (learner level)
available for young beginners to use while they decide if archery is
for them. If archery is a good fit then there is no substitute for
owning your own equipment. Please, don’t spend money to buy equipment until you understand what you need to be successful in the form of archery you prefer. Since you are a beginner, it is important for you to know that it is not a good idea to buy a bow via mail order or from a mass merchandiser. Do that, and chances are it will be the wrong bow for you.
Bows are very personal items that have to be fitted to you and
your needs. Length, mass weight, draw weight, and the intended purpose of your bow need to be considered, as well as your own size, strength and preferences. There is nothing wrong with getting used equipment as long as it is in good condition and fits you and your needs, but to know what fits you and your needs is the tricky part. The place to start is at a professional archery shop. There are many in our region, and we urge you to do the research needed to find the one that “feels right” to you. Contact one of these archery shops, tell them you are a beginner who wants to experience what it is like to shoot a bow before buying one. Ask if you can try several different compound and traditional bows. Once you have tried several bows and have shot enough arrows at the shop range to realize how wonderful archery is, you will have learned enough to help you decide if you want to commit to being an archer, if the answer is yes, then its time to buy the appropriate equipment. |
| What Can You as a Parent Do? |
Help find and retain sponsors of the youth program, if you know any
company that may be willing to sponsor the youth program let us know (sponsors that get printed on the shirts give $100 a year and are due in December 1st of each year), Also when dealing with any of the sponsors listed on the shirts let them know that their sponsorship isvalued.
If costs continue to rise and sponsorship is harder to find, we may
need to have some sort of fundraising activity preformed by the
participants and their families. If anyone has something in mind let
us know.
Scorers are needed weekly to assist.
Donations of time and food are needed for the concession stand for the youth tournament each year.
If your child has their own equipment, have it in safe working order
and sized for your child. Have arrows that are made to use in the poundage of bow your child uses and having the correct arrow tips (Please remember, we do not fix archery equipment but will have a list of places that do on the youth board.)
Help remind the kids, we need to stay safe but we do archery for fun.
If you as a parent have archery knowledge, please help coach the youth when needed.
Keep an eye out for dangerous conditions and stepping in when needed.
